Fetterley Forest Hike – Tuesday, August 4, 2015

Report by Linda Pearce – Our hike on Aug. 4, 2015 was on Otsego Land Trust property on the east side of Canadarago Lake known as Fetterley Forest. Sara Scheeren of the Land Trust led us on the trail and told us of the many facets of the functioning of the non-profit organization, as well as upcoming events. Twenty-three hikers trekked up the half-mile dirt road to the start of the mile trail that loops through the woods. Along the way we enjoyed eating the wild raspberries and blackberries. We also walked by an impressive display of maidenhair ferns. The highlight of the walk was the overlook view of the lake and Deowongo Island. We learned that Deowongo is an Indian word meaning “place of hearing,” referring to the echos that could be heard off the surrounding hills. It was a beautiful morning for a hike.  Photographer Pam Lea.
