Report by Ruth Schaeffer – Tues., Sept. 22 was our hike to Thacher Park near Voorheesville, NY. It was overcast and there were a few sprinkles along the way, but the rest of the day was your typical fall day. We did meet another hiker in Schoharie near the covered bridge over the Schoharie Creek. After a short stop here we continued on and met two more hikers in the park. There were a total of 18 in all.
We hiked the Indian Trail ladder and learned many facts about this area. Many of the hikers hadn’t explored this area. It is a place of deep forests, caves, ancient fossils, wildflowers and spring waterfalls. Perched on the edge of the Helderberg Escarpment, the trail descends to reveal picturesque views of the Hudson and Mohawk River valleys. We had a picnic lunch and then continued on to explore the Thacher nature center. A special thank you to Currie Marr for helping me lead the hike. We did see a little color on a few trees, but they haven’t really changed yet. A wonderful day was had by all who attended. Photographs by Fred Johnson.
