Report by Currie Marr – Thirteen participants hiked to Mud Lake from the Upper Riddell State Park trail entrance. Unlike the muggy hot day before, the weather for this strenuous hike was ideal. Especially the cool breeze was welcomed. The grand reward for the effort was a combination of scenic beauty of the bog, serenity, and viewing the ecosystem floral specialties, such as “American Larch”, “Sheep Laurel” (Kalmia angustifolia), insectivores plants (Sundew and Pitcher), and especially the “Grass-Pink-Orchid” (Calopogon tuberous). The generic name Calopogon means beautiful beard referring to the delicate hairs on the lip. After 6 hours and 6 miles all 13 of us reached our cars anxious to return home.
