Thacher State Park Hike – June 25, 2019

Report by Lucille Wiggin The June 25th hike to Thacher State Park was a success for the nine people who braved the showery weather report and drove the hour and quarter N. E. to Voorheesville, township. The Indian Ladder trail below the cliff was closed for maintenance until July 4th or so. Therefore, we did a 1 &1/2 mi. walk out and back for 3 mi. round trip along the rail fence in the park and were delighted to learn of other parking lots, picnic areas and rest rooms previously unknown. We did catch a couple of sprinkles and a 5-10 min. downpour, but those of us who didn’t have to hike the last 50 yd. ducked into a shelter.
The new Information Visitors Center, opened in 2017, is an education worth the trip by itself. (That is the $6 parking lot, free for those go inside and prove that they have a 65+ person aboard.) There are displays on the geology, flora and fauna, including a bat cave. Picnic tables are readily available and we enjoyed every minute of the cool breeze and (as of noon) sunny view. Difficult to leave. Soooo, we are scheduling a return trip for the second week in October when the Fall colors and the Indian Ladder trail should be spectacular. See you then! Lucille W.
