September 7th, 2021 – Sleeping Lion Trail

Report by Edward Pixley.  On Tuesday, September 7th, the Susquehanna Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club met at Glimmerglass State Park on the northern end of Otsego Lake to hike the Sleeping Lion Trail.  Twenty members and one minor guest participated in the 2.8 mile hike.  The group met at the parking lot just to the south of Hyde Hall.  We choose to hike the trail clockwise so that the ascent of the hill was relatively gentle, leaving the steepest section for the return descent.  Two members walked on the flatter surfaces of the park as an alternative, meeting the larger group at the end near Hyde Hall.  Two members also stayed on afterward to do the Hyde Hall Tour.  The weather was perfect and the company convivial, and no one spotted the bear reported to be wandering in the area, though we did encounter a large burl on one of the trees along the trail. (See photo below)
